FESTIVAL
DMZ 피스트레인 뮤직 페스티벌은 1년에 단 3일, 강원도 철원에서 개최되는 음악 페스티벌로 ‘음악을 통해 정치·경제·이념을 초월하고 자유와 평화를 경험하자’는 취지로 2018년 처음 시작되었습니다.
피스트레인은 시대를 이끌어온 음악을 존중하고, 뚜렷한 목소리와 개성을 지닌 아티스트들을 한자리에 모읍니다. 헤드라이너 없이 음악의 다양성을 최우선 가치로 두며, 관객에게 다양한 음악적 경험을 전달합니다.
페스티벌이 열리는 철원은 한국 전쟁 후 일부는 남한에, 일부는 북한에 귀속되어 분단의 상흔을 담고 있으며, ‘어떠한 적대 행위도 일어나지 않는 평화의 구역'인 비무장지대(DMZ)를 품고 있습니다. 이 곳의 놀랍도록 평화롭고 아름다운 자연환경과 주민들의 이야기는 피스트레인의 음악적 가치와 결합하여 어디에서도 볼 수 없는 고유한 페스티벌 아이덴티티를 형성합니다.
피스트레인은 순위와 장르, 국적과 세대를 초월한 음악을 함께 부르고, 적대 행위 없이 그저 ‘선을 긋기 전에 함께 춤을 추는’ 피스트레인만의 경험을 통해 서로의 경계를 허물며 공존하는 축제 감각을 이어갑니다.
우리는 일상 속에서 무관심하고 무감각해질 수 있는 삶의 보편적 가치들을 문화를 통해 지속적으로 재발견하고자 하며, 자유와 평화, 포용과 관용의 정신이 미래에도 변함없이 지속되기를 바랍니다.
The DMZ Peace Train Music Festival sings out the message of peace in the center of the only lasting divided nation in the world, Korea, in its demilitarized zone (DMZ) in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province.
Peace Train’s priority is to deliver how music helps us overcome differences in political views, economic disparity, and ideological conflicts, to collectively reach an ultimate state of freedom and peace. We simply "Dance for a Borderless World!" without any hostility, singing and dancing together beyond the boundaries of rankings, genres, nationalities, and generations.
Furthermore, Peace Train aims to uncover important values in life that are often overlooked and forgotten, hoping that values such as freedom, peace, human rights, and generosity continue to hold significance for the generations to come.
The deepest value of life lies in the simple act of being alive. To be alive is to move through each moment as it unfolds, greeting the future anew each time. In this sense, we instinctively pursue life and the future. “Living well” is the very essence of peace and happiness, the most fundamental principle humanity must strive for.
Yet, political strife, conflict, hatred, and exclusion across the world now threaten lives and erase futures. For too many, the right to "live well" is denied by borders, race, or conditions beyond their control.
We believe that a festival is a time and space where we affirm to one another that we are still "living well" in the face of every future. It is a communal act that heightens every sense, beginning with the beating of our hearts, as we immerse ourselves in a world created together and fully experience the vitality that flows towards us from the future.
At this year’s Peace Train, we hope to collectively recognize that "living well" is not guaranteed for everyone in the light of current reality. Let us reaffirm our belief that life and the future are values that every single person on Earth deserves.
삶은, 살아있다는 사실 자체로 이미 그 가치를 증명합니다. 살아있다는 것은 매 순간 다음의 시간을 살아내며, 매번 미래를 맞이하는 일입니다. 그렇게 우리는 본능처럼 생명과 미래를 추구합니다. ‘잘 살아 있음’이야말로 평화이자 행복이고 인류가 추구해야 할 가장 단순한 명제입니다.
그러나, 지금 세계 곳곳에서 벌어지는 수많은 정쟁과 분쟁, 혐오와 배척은 생명을 위협하고 미래를 지웁니다. 특정 국가에 산다는 이유로, 특정 인종이기 때문에, 혹은 스스로 선택하지 않은 조건들로 인해 ‘잘 살아 있음’을 누리지 못하는 삶들이 늘어나고 있습니다.
우리는 축제가 매번의 미래 앞에서 여전히 잘 살아 있음을 서로에게 확인하는 시간이며 공간이라고 믿습니다. 심장의 움직임으로부터 출발하는 신체의 모든 감각을 곤두세워 함께 만든 세계에 머물며 매순간 미래로부터 다가오는 생명력을 온전히 경험하는 공동체의 활동이기도 합니다.
올해에도 피스트레인을 통해, 지금 인류가 처한 현실 앞에서 ‘잘 살아 있음’이 모두에게 당연한 상태는 아니라는 사실을 함께 인식하고, 다시 한 번 생명과 미래가 지구 위 한 명 한 명이 마땅히 누려야 할 가치라는 믿음을 되새기길 바랍니다.

In the fall of 2017, as tensions between the US and North Korea reached their peak, the music festival 'Zandari Festa' took place in Hongdae, Seoul. After the event, Martin Elbourne (main booker for Glastonbury Festival) visited the DMZ. Struck by the border's unique landscape and subtle tension, he proposed creating a music festival to broadcast a genuine message of peace:
"Right time, right place."
UK music industry veterans and Korean organizers quickly teamed up. With musician Cat Stevens' blessing to use his song "Peace Train" as the title, Cheorwon was chosen as the festival's home.
미국과 북한의 갈등이 최고조에 이르던 2017년 가을, 서울 홍대에서는 음악 축제 ‘잔다리페스타’가 어김없이 개최되었다. 매년 해외 아티스트와 음악 관계자가 대거 방문하는데, 그해에는 유달리 한반도의 긴장 상황에 우려를 표하는 이들이 많았다. 70여 년의 휴전 상황 속에서도 늘 그러했듯 축제는 무사히 치러졌고, 행사 마지막 날 일부 해외 인사들은 파주 임진각 인근의 DMZ 투어에 나섰다.
이들 중 영국 글라스톤베리 페스티벌의 메인 부커 마틴엘본 (Martin Elbourne)은 접경지역만이 가진 자연의 풍광과 오묘한 긴장감을 경험한 후 서울로 돌아와 잔다리페스타의 기획자들에게 제안을 건넸다. 마지막 남은 냉전 지대에서 진짜 평화의 메시지를 외치는 음악 페스티벌을 한 번 만들어 보라는 제안이었다.
“바로 지금, 바로 이곳이다(Right time, right place).”
두 달 후, 마틴 엘본과 뜻을 같이한 영국 독립 레이블 쿠킹 바이닐의 회장 마틴 골드슈미트, ‘아프리카 익스프레스’ 기획자 스테판 버드, 뮤직 글루의 마크 머해리가 한국을 방문했다. 잔다리페스타 기획자들과 이들은 강원도 고성과 철원 일대의 비무장지대 인근을 답사한 후 노동당사, 월정리역 등 분단의 상흔과 음악 축제에 적합한 인프라를 갖춘 철원을 페스티벌의 최종 사이트로 선정했다.

On June 23, 2018, riding the peaceful wave of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, the inaugural DMZ Peace Train Music Festival launched with a clear message: "Give Peace a Chance."
2018년 6월 23일, 평창 동계올림픽과 남북 정상회담을 거치며 고조된 평화의 무드 속에, 국내외 많은 아티스트의 뜻깊은 참여와 관심 속에 DMZ 피스트레인 뮤직 페스티벌이 ‘Give Peace a Chance’를 외치며 첫 운행을 시작했다.

Cheorwon is a geopolitical hub located in the heart of the Korean Peninsula. Historically the capital of the Taebong Kingdom and a major transport center, it later became a fierce battleground during the Korean War. Today, it remains a divided and symbolic land embracing the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
The area features a unique geological landscape, with the Hantan River carving deep gorges across a massive basalt lava plateau. The festival's main venue, Goseokjeong Pavilion, boasts a spectacular 10-meter rock formation. Here, natural wonders blend with decommissioned tanks and fighter planes, creating a peculiar yet endearing scenery.
Just an hour and a half from Seoul, this unexpected landscape creates a highly unique festival vibe. Audiences can enjoy live music, take a boat ride down the river gorge, or eat local spicy mandarin fish stew at nearby restaurants.
Physical remnants of history, such as the former Labor Party Building, Woljeong-ri Station, and Baengmagoji Battlefield, serve as special stages for Peace Train. At these intersections of history and nature, boundaries blur, creating a symbolic space to deeply sense peace.
철원은 강원도 북서부, 한반도의 심장부에 위치한 지정학적 요충지다. 역사적으로는 궁예가 세운 태봉의 수도이자, 일제강점기 철도와 도로가 교차하며 번성했던 교통의 중심지였다. 그러나 한국전쟁 당시 중부전선의 핵심 지역으로서 치열한 격전을 거치며 탈환이 반복되다가 결국 분단된 채 지금까지 흘러왔다. 현재는 비무장지대(DMZ)와 남방한계선, 민통선 마을을 품은 분단의 상흔이 가장 깊게 새겨진 상징적인 땅이다. 한반도를 넘어 세계 각국에서 온 병사들의 숨결이 남은 이 낯설고도 특별한 대지는 지질학적으로도 독특한 결을 지닌다.
현무암 분출로 형성된 거대한 용암대지 위로 한탄강이 흐르며 오랜 세월 빚어낸 수직 절벽과 협곡은 철원만의 독보적인 경관을 완성한다. 특히 페스티벌의 주 무대인 고석정 유원지에는 10미터 높이의 거대한 고석정 바위가 절경을 이루며, 여기에 철원을 상징하는 임꺽정과 두루미, 탱크와 비행기와 같은 조형물이 어우러져 오묘하고도 정겨운 풍경을 연출한다.
서울에서 차로 불과 한 시간 반, 이 가까운 거리에서 마주하는 철원의 의외의 풍광은 지역 주민들의 일상과 피스트레인의 색깔이 버무려져 기묘한 바이브를 형성한다. 음악적 다양성을 최우선으로 생각하는 사람들이 고석정 유원지에 모인다. 여기에서는 공연을 즐기다 한탄강 협곡으로 내려가 통통배를 타고, 춤을 추다가 근처 식당에서 쏘가리 매운탕을 먹을 수도 있다.
노동당사와 월정리역, 백마고지, 소이산, 수도국터 등 물리적 실체로 존재하는 철원의 장소들은 피스트레인의 또 다른 무대가 된다. 역사와 생태, 문화적 경계가 교차하는 이곳은 서로의 경계가 지워지고 연결되는 접점으로, 과거와 연결되어 평화를 감각하는 상징적인 공간이 된다.
